grandpa thoughts

i know i should be sleeping at 1am, but sleepiness evades me despite my yawns a few hours ago.

i thought i'd cry buckets again when i see grandpa's body, but i didn't. maybe i'd tired myself out from crying earlier in the day. maybe i went into task mode, at the prospect of relatives streaming in.

grandpa looks weird after the embalment and make-up. first time i see him in a suit. his face's tilted to the right, cuz of the position he was in when he died, and the muscles stiffened as a result. weird to look at his body, knowing he's having the time of his life in Heaven.

found a slip of paper with his handwriting in his bible (placed in his coffin). kept it, especially after reading the words. my guess is that he wrote it in the early years of his dementia, when the biggest threat to his health was decreased mobility and strength. his handwriting betrayed that too-it lacked the strength of his usual firm strokes. but the content made me realize that he probably knew his health would lead to a long journey. I shall attempt to translate it from mandarin:

"I know who holds the future, I know God holds my hand. In Him nothing is coincidental; it is all by His grace. In all that I will come to face, regardless of its magnitude, I will trust the omnipotent God; I entrust my all to Him. "

i suddenly wish i had been more receptive to God then. it would have been so interesting to talk to grandpa about Him.

i'm thankful i found this little treasure, in the form of a yellow pages note. i'll remember his rare but beautiful grin when something really tickled him. the times he brought me to the playground, followed me to school in the first weeks of Pri.1, teaching me to cycle and swim, tutoring me in mandarin and mental sums, the way he loved and treasured me; these i cherish so much.

i hope there're bicycles in Heaven; grandpa liked to cycle...

grandpa's gone Home

he developed a fever again, and nursing home wanted to send him to the hospital but grandma didn't want to. nothing new, but i didn't react badly to it for once.

i talked it out with God, wondering if He was telling me that grandpa's going Home for sure this time round. felt like it was. but seemed too eerie. i even thought through how i would get the call from someone informing me of the news. how morbid.

but nothing ever really prepares one for death i think. even though the whole immediate family visited him on Monday, how the scrawniness of his arm made me wish silently God would end his suffering, even though i know he's now with God, enjoying eternity and free from pain forever, able to see and walk and speak.

the pain comes from losing a grandfather who was more like a father to me. from him not being able to physically witness my wedding, which he very much wanted to.

he's in a better place, i know. it still hurts.

thank You God, for grandpa.

Happy Chinese Niu Year

and so the CNY celebrations have ended. next year will be different. different customs, relatives, food and environment...here's a few things that i observed with interest over the weekend

  • my family gives ang pows in pairs while his give only one. for some odd reason, the rationale for the tradition in my family (extended on grandparents' side) is to denote the giver's marital status. A pair from a couple or single ang pow if the giver's divorced or the spouse is deceased. i'm not sure if it's a cantonese thing either. i was highy amused when grandma gave hubby2be his angpows and he wanted to take only one. hee hee.
  • i'm used to leaving the house after lunch to go visiting, but hubby2be starts early on the 1st day
  • i feel very impaired having to hold a conversation in mandarin, after having spoken english and cantonese much of my life :P not to say that my cantonese is that great to begin with, haha. but i'd better keep learning, sincefuture mum-in-law speaks mandarin
  • grandma buys pussy willow (a plant, if you don't know what it is) every CNY. hubby2be had no clue what it was...
  • relatives expressed their relief (and glee!) in not having to give me ang pow next year, until i reminded them they'd have to give my kid(s) once i enter motherhood
one of the many 'last' things before wedding bells ring...

day dreams

imagine the lovely smell of banana bread wafting out of the oven, in our 'nest'

imagine the beautiful colours of dawn breaking during a hike up bkt timah hill, the birds chirping to rouse their neighbours awake

imagine the sun's rays glistening in clear water, the waves rolling softly inland

imagine dancing to Your voice, with no inhibition of physical flexibility or creative imagination

imagine people realizing Truth and receiving unfathomable Grace for their souls

imagine the walk down the aisle, and the journey that lies ahead of us as One with Him

imagine the joy of a child in my arms, looking like us, but created in His image

imagine...

love

"...even though i want to love you unconditionally and perfectly, i can't, because i'm not perfect..."

open up the heavens...and my heart

last night attended 24/7 prayer launch in the office. was really blessed. sitting in for Alternation's worship prac did something to me i think. was there early cuz hubby2be was doing sound, so i plonked myself down with my study bible and mr. brown to do sat and sun's 'readings'.

as i read of joseph's time in egypt with the music and lyrics drowning my ears, i almost felt like God was doing something in my heart. there wasn't any relation between the two, but as i sat there, it occurred to me that i hadn't given much thought about this prayer week i was to be part of. and there began the knocking on the door of my heart to let compassion in.

for the first time in quite a while, tears flowed easily in intercession during worship. and i'm glad.

learning to expand my spiritual horizon. so badly needed.

the measure of a man

Last night I attended the wake of the longest serving SCCC staff, Paul Sankaran, otherwise known to most of us as 'Uncle Sank'. The latter term of address actually resulted from a funny incident; some other staff started calling him 'Uncle Sank' after overhearing a colleague (John) call him that, unaware that John was Uncle Sank's nephew. They had assumed John had addressed him as 'Uncle' out of respect for an older staff member.

So Uncle Sank went Home at the age of 82, having journeyed with his wife for a few decades and serving in full time ministry ceaselessly until his retirement last year due to health issues. As with most wakes, one awaits to hear the eulogy that would attempt to succinctly chronicle the deceased's life. There are many ways to do that, and if life were a game, there would be 3 ways to keep score, John Ortberg propositions in "It All Goes Back In The Box".

We either compare ourselves with others, compete with others or attempt to climb over them. In comparing ourselves, we may do so via upward comparison (compare with those who are better off), lateral comparison (those at the same level) or downward comparison (those who are worse off). Doing so would breed envy, competition and arrogance, respectively. It probably appears that such comparisons are 'natural' and 'unavoidable'. In fact, if we persuade ourselves more, we might even be convinced that a little competition never hurt any one, and gives us a little motivation to do better at work.

But really, is that really why we work our butts off, be it in the marketplace or not? Consider Ortberg's words, "One of the main reasons we are tempted to get more invested in our work than in our relationships is that in our vocations it's easier to keep score."

I'll be among the first to confess that even if no one places any pressure on me to perform in my new role as a ministry leader or to be an excellent wife [-to-be], I would still keep score.  (Now how does that work? by the loads of laundry I can wash and press? or the meals that I cook?) Why? Simply because I want to be remembered, to convince myself that I'm good enough. But, good enough for what? Honestly, I don't think I really know.

I should learn from Reese Witherspoon, who recently starred in '4 Christmases'. Of dealing with the harsh standards placed on women in Hollywood, she says,
It's one of those endless competitions, but it's like running a race toward nothing. There's no winning. You're never going to win the thin race. You're never going to win the pretty race. You're never going to win the smart race. You're never going to win the funny race. I just want to be the best version of myself I can be."

Or maybe, as Ortberg suggests, going by the oddest scoring system would do better-"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,...taking the very nature of a servant."

Uncle Sank was one such person. His relentless passion to share eternity with all he came across saw him tracting at MRT stations with his wife, setting up a ministry online so that he could still reach people even though he wasn't as physically fit as before. He sowed into the lives of his children, his nephews, and to strangers. I was humbled when, last year at an office meeting, he quietly slipped away during a break after he discovered that there would be a time to honor him, for his years of dedication and service in the ministry. This was a man who did not care for attention being brought to himself; it was Jesus that mattered.

His investment in the lives of people has, and will continue to leave a spiritual legacy. And I think, he's enjoying many a conversation with Paul, his baptism namesake.

a walk in the park

the wind blows across the sea
its waves now stirred, come sweeping in
the breeze wraps around my skin
whispering softly to the trees

city lights dot the skyline
as boats gently bob in its wake
it's a sight to behold
pure bliss, this tranquil scene

we step away from beauty's call
the night curtains well-nigh to fall
i slip my hand into my love's palm
the warmth familiar, a soothing balm

the sweet surrender of the night still hangs
tempting any to yield to its charm
the moon peeked up to say good night
and i in return bid adieu

no reservations

hubby2be and i watched the show on vcd just now, having bought it at less than the cost of 1 movie ticket. i was surprised at how drawn i was to the show, especially cuz i read the less than impressive review of the movie when it was first released.

catherine zeta jones is really pretty, and the little girl 'zoey' too, with her huge eyes and her amazing ability to bring across the heart wrenching emotions required of her orphaned character. the food didn't make me drool; in fact, i heard about food being called across the kitchen more than seeing it being prepared (ok, i should tune in to anthony bourdain if i really want that). it was a nice sweet show, with eckhart's reel persona challenging every rule that slowly but oh so surely gains him entry into the heart of 'kate' (: i love romantic shows.

it's the weekend. looking forward to a dip in the pool if the weather bodes well, and maybe whipping something up. and seeing the bridesmaid (:

A new year, and what a start!

Happy new year! haha, ok, so i'm 7days late ;)

it has been only about 8days of 2009 but wow, quite a bit has happened. my new role in leading the dance ministry has officially started, but am still trying to tie up loose ends before i determine to sit in front of the lappy and write 2proposals regarding the ministry. it'll take a while to fully transit i think; i still catch myself reminding s. about stuff like i used to when i was still his P.A. :P

and wedding preparations have started! we finally got the sanctuary booked, so book your dates in the diary: 4th july's the big day (: but if you're reading this, i'd have probably SMS-ed you about it already, hee. and no, we're not making a statement about wanting our own independence (since the date coincides with USA's Independence Day), but cuz the hubby2be's hatchday is the day before. so it'll be a guarantee (i hope) that he won't forget our anniversary. haha...

i got my wedding shoes yesterday! at $23 from charles & keith! hee hee. was so happy i finally found them after the search that started in nov. thank God k. went with me as i really needed a second opinion in deciding. and really glad that the gown fitting's before CNY, so i won't hafta watch my eating so much during that week. i'll just hafta work off any extra calories after that. :P

house, you still evade us. yea that's the biggest need of all-pray we'll get it soon! (:
